Tahltan Business Council Pleased Over Federal Commitment

DEASE LAKE, BC-- The Tahltan Business Council is pleased over Ottawa's commitment of funds for building the Northwest Power Transmission line.

"We are pleased to see this project move forward with the federal green energy fund and see this as a positive step towards creating a strong economy in northern BC," says the President of the Tahltan Business Council, Gordon Loverin.

Northern BC and especially Tahltan territory is rich with mining projects. This line will help plan the development opportunities that await clean and sustainable energy to bring them into production. However, the line also can help bring green energy projects online, especially those opportunities within Tahltan territory.

"We have potential for wind, geothermal and biomass energy production and my hope is that the BC Government, in concert with Ottawa and the Yukon Government, will work with Tahltan interests to continue building the powerline that connects northern Canada to the south," says Loverin.

There may be power ready to be shipped south from Alaska but both BC and Ottawa should remember that there are energy potentials in Canada first. I hope the push to continue building the line along Highway 37 to the Yukon border does not falter as this would be a missed opportunity for further strengthening the northern economy.

"Unemployment in our region has a direct connection to the health of the mining industry and I am excited to see that this line will address that issue once power connects to the Red Chris property," says Loverin.

The Tahltan Business Council is prepared to work positively with both government and industry to maximize opportunities in Tahltan Territory. "Your successes are our successes," Loverin concluded.
